The Best Wireless Car Phone Charger Mounts

We spent more than 100 hours researching 11 wireless-charging smartphone car mounts, and testing six of the most promising models, to find that Scosche’s StuckUp Qi is the best one for most people who have a phone that supports the Qi wireless-charging standard (which includes the latest iPhones and many Android phones).

If you don’t want to spend quite so much and you’re willing to give up some charging speed, Dodocool’s DA135 10W 3-coil Fast Wireless Car Charger is a good alternative to our pick. This model is the only unit we tested with three charging coils, covering more area of the mount, which means you don’t have to be as precise when aligning your phone with the mount.

How we picked

A good wireless-charging car mount should meet all of the following basic criteria, which we used as guidelines for our research.

• WPC certification: Qi is a wireless-charging standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium, a trade group made up of dozens of tech companies from around the world. Most smartphones that charge wirelessly, including Apple’s iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus, and many Android phones, use Qi charging. Being certified by the WPC means that a charger has been tested and found to be both safe and in compliance with the Qi standard.
• Charging speed: The Qi 1.2 standard, the latest, supports charging speeds of up to 15 watts (9 volts/1.67 amps), but 5 W and 7.5 W chargers are more common right now. With this in mind, we selected a range of chargers that supported different speeds to measure the real-world differences between them.
• Power source: We preferred wireless chargers that used a standard connection—Micro-USB is the most common—and came bundled with a DC adapter.
• Price: The most expensive charger we researched was $70, but some sell for about $30 while offering similar performance.
• Design: This criterion includes not only how the charging cradle looks but also how well it holds the phone, how easily the grip opens and closes, and how well the cradle mounts in a car, as well as any extras such as charging-indicator lights.
• Maker reputation: We considered models only from companies that we knew had a good reputation for warranty coverage and customer support.

Our pick: Scosche’s StuckUp Qi

Scosche’s StuckUp Qi has a fairly standard mounting mechanism, but it’s the best wireless-charging car mount for most people because it fully recharged our test phones as fast as or faster than any other WPC-certified charger we tested. When we used it to charge our iPhone 8, it was nearly an hour and a half faster—or more than 50 percent quicker—than the next-closest competitor. Scosche is a well-known brand in car accessories and mobile phone gear, with a reputation for quality products and customer support; the company’s three-year warranty means you’ll be able to get help if you have a problem.

Across three charging tests, the StuckUp Qi fully charged an iPhone 8 from empty in an average of 2.7 hours. It took our runner-up 4.2 hours to provide the same charge. (When we tested with an iPhone 8 Plus, the Scosche charger completed the task in 3.7 hours, only a minute faster than the next-best model.)

The StuckUp Qi comes with everything you need: The Qi charging cradle, an adjustable gooseneck mount that terminates in a suction cup coated with a sticky adhesive layer, a Micro-USB cable, and a single-port USB power adapter to plug into your car’s 12-volt accessory outlet (aka cigarette lighter). The StuckUp Qi’s suction mount and cradle are simple to use and hold the phone securely.

The StuckUp Qi’s phone cradle is adjustable in both width and height, allowing it to accommodate phones up to 3.5 inches across. This means that even the iPhone 8 Plus in a wide case will fit just fine. (The thickness of your phone’s case may affect wireless charging, though.) The cradle also has two small supports on the bottom that you can adjust to align the phone for optimum charging.

You can mount the StuckUp Qi to either your dashboard or your windshield. The suction cup has a sticky adhesive; together, the suction and stickiness create a strong grip on even a textured dash surface. Scosche says that if the mount loses its grippiness (something that may happen if you’re attaching and detaching it regularly), “simply rinse the suction cup off with lukewarm water, shake and let air dry.”

Again, our runner-up, the Dodocool’s DA135 10W 3-coil Fast Wireless Car Charger is a great choice if you would rather save a few dollars and you’re not as concerned about overall charging speed. Rather than positioning the phone cradle at the end of an adjustable arm, the Dodocool’s mount attaches to a shorter, more stable-feeling base with a ball joint connecting the two. Thanks to this design, making small adjustments to the cradle’s position is a little easier, and in our testing on bumpy roads, the phone didn’t move around as much.
